HANNAH’S STORY

Woman smiling and talking

Going to the Word of Life Bible Institute was a tremendous step for me due to the fact that I had been homeschooled all my life. Previously, I was used to a small classroom – my siblings and I, and one teacher – my sweet mom. This meant that I had only one teaching style to get used to, I did not have to wait in line for lunch or write out an email to my teacher when I had a question. My mom was always present and constantly available.

As a homeschooled student, I always heard about the stereotypes that public schooled people labeled us with – either we were incredibly smart or mind-blowingly ignorant.

While I did not pay any attention to what others said, I did know one thing:

Transitioning from a homeschooled life to a college would in fact be just that – a transition.

I debated between Word of Life and another small college in Connecticut for quite some time before committing to Word of Life.

Yet the unexpected happened: the transition was pretty much seamless.

Yes, there was the expected homesickness, tears and painful goodbyes. But my admissions counselor took time to ensure that I knew my way around campus, the student life staff warmly greeted me, and even the chefs in the kitchen opened their doors to me in such a home-like and welcoming way that I immediately felt comfortable.

Another thing I was not expecting is that the professors and staff ate lunch – and sometimes dinner – with us students every weekday. They were open, honest and carried on perfectly normal conversations. They had lives outside of teaching and families they absolutely adored. They had fascinating hobbies and unusual dislikes. Most of all, they took the time to extend the circle of their family in order to include you. Plus, if I ever had some theological or biblical question, tracking down that specific professor in the lunchroom was fairly simple.

An added blessing is that all of the freshman and sophomore students walk to the same classroom together and stay in that same classroom all day. This greatly eased my fear about having to quickly move between classrooms or getting lost in a system I was not used to.

While I did have to stand in line for lunch and while there were multiple different styles of teachings adjust to, the joy of being in God’s word was so inexpressible those factors did not end up amounting to much.

Currently, I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in biology at another university, and I can honestly say that I feel more comfortable here because of Word of Life. My time there provided a structure that I was able to carry into the college I am currently at. It taught me lessons that were not just applicable for my time there but were applicable for life in general. On the other hand, there were concepts that were instilled in me that may have not made sense to me at the moment, but I know that they were just the foundation for something down the road that God is going to teach me.

On-campus classes can be a bit overwhelming for students who are used to having the accountability that comes with learning at home. At WOLBI, students are personally responsible for their schoolwork, but the campus format is more structured, helping create a blend between accountability and independence. Everyone is in the same classes and has the same assignments, and days follow a clear routine and schedule, helping equip students to succeed in a large classroom setting.

Our main campus is located in upstate New York, in the heart of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. We also have teaching sites outside of Tampa, Florida and around the world!

In New York, we have between 400-500 students in our first year and second year programs. Smaller class sizes allow for one-on-one support from professors and tight-knit friendships in an environment where everyone shares your values and is committed to encouraging each other in faith.

Yes, we are an accredited college-level program where students will earn college credit as they study the Bible. Up to 40 hours of credit will transfer, and we are in partnership with many four-year colleges that accept graduates of Word of Life Bible Institute and even offer tuition discounts to Word of Life alumni.

The base cost for a year at Word of Life Bible Institute is $19,404. This includes tuition and fees, room and board, and all meals. With our fees being half of those of the average private Christian college, we estimate that a student will save almost $20,000 over the course of his or her college career – just by spending one life at Word of Life Bible Institute. We never want finances to be the reason why a student is unable to attend the Bible Institute. That’s why over 95% of our students receive financial help! This aid comes in the form of local and Bible Institute scholarships, loans, and grants.

We consider every student a gift from God to us. We recognize that as a parent, you have spent many years investing into the life of your child, and we exist to build on that foundation. Word of Life has a safety and security team that is highly trained and effective in keeping your child safe. In addition to ensuring the physical security of our campus, Word of Life is also an encouraging, positive environment where spiritual growth and biblical values are emphasized. You can feel at peace knowing your child will be loved and the values you taught him or her at home will continue to be cultivated at school.

Yes, we have a ratio of one staff member for every five students. Each student is known by name and has the opportunity to have a personal mentoring relationship with faculty and staff.
