Loss of Conviction

We live in a society where issues of preference and convenience dominate our attention. All of this hustle and bustle distracts us from what life really is. Today we talk about things that we are passionate about, like football teams, food, clothes, television shows, and the like.  Rarely do we talk about overcoming the social, moral, and humanitarian ills that we face. We infrequently stop and say, “This ought not to be.”

Examine yourself; when was the last time you were shaken to your very core? I would wager for many of us it has been years, perhaps even a lifetime. We are content to shuffle forward without truly caring. For the record, sharing a post and a hash tag about a hot topic doesn’t count. Until we are moved beyond words and troubled to our very soul, we will not see an end to violence, abuse, the dehumanization of life, and all of the various evil things that when we look at the world around us, we know in our hearts, ought not to be.

Christians above all cannot afford to loose their conviction, for when they do, their very soul is on the line. For when we are not captured by Christ’s death on the cross and our hearts stirred by His infinite love for us we quickly grow cold and embittered by frivolous things. When Christians lose their conviction they forget the Gospel, and sadly, a Gospel forgotten is a Gospel forsaken.

Christian, take stock of your life and ask, “What are you living for?” As Crawford Loritts has said, “Ask yourself what makes you pound the table and weep”, then pursue that thing with the clarity and conviction of the Gospel.
